| COMBINING COMPASSION AND ART |

KATO, KCAI Artists Together in Outreach, a collaborative group from the Kansas City Art Institute has partnered with Artists Helping the Homeless and Wayside Waifs to produce a body of work that reflects the efforts of these organizations’ outreach. The body of work includes: Valentine’s Day cards, handmade flowers, buttons, hand printed t-shirts along with other items. There will be printing demonstrations and pet portraiture the day of the event.

Theresa Hitchcock These handmade cards are made from a combination of recycled material and
collage images. To give them a soft look, they are adorned with lace, buttons,
and vellum paper. These cards are perfect for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, or
anytime you want to let the ones you love know how much you care for them.

I am a painting major at the Kansas City Art Institute. Currently exploring cultural identity, I am drawn to help others. Working with Artist Helping the Homeless has given me the chance to use my set of skills to do just that. I am interested in using resources that would otherwise be thrown away, to create new and beautiful things. Much of my media is scrap material worked over with great care, to give it worth once again. Anyone and anything can transform into something to be proud of, and this is why I enjoy working with AHTH, and creating art pieces.

John Hilger
I am currently an Interdisciplinary Arts major at the Kansas City Art Institute where I explore a variety of materials and processes in an effort to broaden my artistic practice. Working with Artists Helping the Homeless has giving me an opportunity to use my art to get involved with the community at a grassroots level. It has been a rewarding experience that has enriched both my life, and my art. All cards are handmade from recycled materials.

Screen printing 1. A printing technique that uses a woven mesh to support an ink blocking stencil. The attached stencil forms open areas of mesh that transfer ink as a sharp-edged image onto a substrate. A roller or squeegee is moved across the screen stencil forcing or pumping ink past the threads of the woven mesh in the open areas. 2. A stencil method of print making in which a design is imposed on a screen of silk or other fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance, and ink is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface. Also known as Silk Screening or Serigraphy.

Sophomore at the Kansas City Art Institute seeking a B.F.A in Digital Filmmaking. With a visual arts background founded in drawing and painting, developed a visual language in tradition and digital approaches for design, image making, and animation. My visual arts experience has included commissioned design and painted work. In digital filmmaking I have created a number of shorts that were viewed in festivals and gallery shows.
Now working on a documentary film for Artists Helping The Homeless.

We are working with students from the art department to create work for this just cause. We will soon post their works for sell to aid in the homeless programs.
Our first major outdoor art event will be schedule for next Spring
on Mid America Nazarene University campus.
